About

How It Started

In May 2011, I was on the phone with a representative from my car and renters insurance company trying to explain what my husband and I would be doing for the next 9-12 months. “You’re moving where?” she asked. “Alaska,” I said. “But only until December, and then we will be going somewhere else.” And then I launched into the story, one I was not always sure best how to tell, trying to explain what a traveling physical therapist does, like a traveling nurse I usually said. Then I said, yes we wanted to go Alaska, it was our top choice.

Perhaps my best explanation is this: we wanted to travel and see different parts of the country, to go beyond just being a tourist. We were looking for adventure and to grow and learn about places and people we didn’t know. My husband took a job with a company that would find him a position almost any place in the country. We planned to move every 3-4 months to a new place and a new job. Like Alaska, we got to give them places we would like to be, and they would look to see which clinics or hospitals needed to fill a temporary position. (But after 4 1/2 months, we decided to stay, so it became the year of Alaska!) It was our first year of marriage, we had no kids, no house, and it seemed if we were every going to take a journey like this, now was the time. So we jumped. Feet first or head first. We packed and stored all our belonging and brand new wedding presents. Filled a few bags and boxes to take to Alaska and got on a plane.

The next question, the representative, and nearly everyone else asked, was what will you do? This question  made me a little uncomfortable, because there wasn’t really a straight forward answer. I told her I just graduated from a university in Michigan with my Masters degree in creative writing. I went on to explain that I spent the last three years teaching writing, in various forms, at the university. But that I did not currently have a teaching job. Instead, I was going to spend time writing, cooking, and traveling. And she said to me, “You should write a blog about all this. I would read it.” It seemed strange hearing this from someone I didn’t know and would never know. It surprised me that she would be interested in my life. I told her, “Maybe I should.” And so I did.

Now

After a 5,000 mile road trip from Alaska to Pennsylvania, we settled in Carlisle. We spent a year exploring central PA, particularly enjoying our proximate to DC, local festivals/events, and some great backpacking and hiking trips. And now, of course, we have packed up and moved once again. This time we are settling in another corner of the Keystone state, western PA!

Initially, after leaving Alaska, I felt like the title of my blog might not quite fit since we were out of the travel physical therapy game, although we continue to move like we are! But then I am reminded that we are in a new part of the country, with new places to explore, and I have decided I can perhaps still consider myself “nomadic” in a less conventional way. We will still travel. I am still in the mood to wander, to search, even if it is in a less dramatic way than literally picking up my stuff and moving every 3-4 months. So I am sticking with the name.

Let the new adventures begin!

Thanks for a great blog. We were in Alaska several years ago and visited many of the places you are describing. Its a pleasure to read about your adventures, it has allowed me to “revisit” one of my favorite places on earth…again. I am looking forward to your continued travels and wonderful descriptions. If you went to school here in Michigan, its likely we are alums of the same university.

I just happened upon your blog. I spent 2 years living in Alaska – 1 year in Anchorage and the other in Fairbanks. Such an amazing place! I was only supposed to spend a year there – before leaving Massachusetts, people who had visited AK told me it would get it’s hooks in me – it did. I met my husband there and we stayed another year. 16 years after leaving Alaska, it still pulls at me. Enjoy every moment in the Great North – it is magical!

AK will be our home soon enough. 🙂 Next year will find us there, and hard to explain our work as well, but the easiest way to explain would be “missionary work” Spouce and children looking forward to our adventure! I just found you here and will tag along to enjoy your adventure. Blessings!!!

  8. Married for 14 years, one child, one dog, two cats, one guinea pig, two fish, two non-mobile jobs, family, and deep deep roots will keep my feet firmly planted. But, I am going to enjoy your adventure so much. Wish I would have done something similiar, before the above mentioned responsibilities blessed my life.
    ENJOY!

I will arrive in Anchorage. Was going to get a part-time job at a hostel but they recently gave the job to someone else (who could start sooner then I was to arrive) so now my plans are up in the air again…so I am just going to wing-it

Alaska! That is a must on my travel list.
I’m currently toying with and experiencing the same idea of temporary settlement – part nomad, part nester. A year in various places around my own country, India. It’s amazing what varied landscapes exist within created borders.
Looking forward to hearing more about the snow,
    Ruth.

My husband and I did something similar years ago when he took a temporary job in Anchorage. We moved back to the lower 48 after our year here and spent the next six years wishing we could return. We finally did and now we’ve been here almost 18 years. Alaska is the best.

I love how you’ve refused to put yourself ‘in a box’ and are free forming your lifestyle to suit yourselves and not other people/societies expectations…..the more incredulous the reaction probably indicates quite a bit of jealousy!! keep roaming, keep changing, it’s a big world with a global internet, and life is meant to be explored! Congrats on being freshly pressed, you deserve it.

  21. Hi, I just stumbled upon your blog and love it. I lived in Hawaii (look at the pictures here: http://littlemissitchyfeet.com/2012/05/21/hawaianischer-heimat-hymnen-haiku/) and since this time, watching the whales moving back and forth from Hawaii to Alaska, I feel drawn to do the same. Back in Austria after traveling on and off for about 1,5 years, my feet are constantely itching to move on.. Alaska is definitely high up on the list, calling my name 😉 Glad to have found a place where I can at least read about it 😉

  22. I went up to Alaska in 1998, as back then (before husband and child) I was a nomad just traveling around. I went up to work as a nanny in Yakutat for the summer … and I ended up staying for 5 years doing different jobs in lodges, exploring southeast Alaska and the Anchorage / Homer area. I fell in love with Alaska so I understand why you decided to stay for a much longer time. I long to return some day for a long summer with my family… backpacking and whatever else. Cheers to your journey!
